Family Devotion Day 17: Children of the Church

Read

Numbers 16:8-9 “Moses also said to Korah, “Now listen, you Levites! Isn’t it enough for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the rest of the Israelite community and brought you near himself to do the work at the Lord’s tabernacle and to stand before the community and minister to them?”

Learn

Were you born in a Christian family? If so, like many others, you are a second-generation believer. It is a blessing to have parents who love God!

But there is something that you need to be careful of as a second-generation Christian.

Keep sharing about God

Second-generation Christians may be less excited to share about God with the people around them, either because they can’t remember one moment in their lives when they decided to believe in Jesus, or because they don’t realise the importance of their relationship with Jesus.

So it’s easy to become distracted and forget what God wants us to do.

Korah, the proud man

Korah, the great-grandson of Levi, was an example of a second-generation Christian who became distracted from his responsibility to care for the Tabernacle, the place of worship for the Israelites.

He wanted to become the leader, so he led a group of 250 Israelites to challenge Moses and Aaron, the leaders that God had already chosen. It didn’t end well! The ground under them split apart, and Korah and his followers were swallowed into the earth.

But do second-generation believers really need to have a second-hand or a second-grade faith?

Which path would you choose?

After seeing what had happened to their father, Korah’s children learnt their lesson. They turned from the path of sin!

For the generations that came after Korah, some became caretakers of the Tabernacle, some rose up as mighty warriors and some became songwriters — in fact, many of the beautiful praise songs in the book of Psalms that we still sing today are actually written by them!

Like the children of Korah, you can be part of a generation of sons and daughters who are passionate about serving God and sharing His goodness with others!

/ Discuss
  • If you are a second-generation Christian, how can you continue spending time with Jesus and loving Him?
  • What stops you from sharing your faith with others?
/ Pray
  • Pray and ask God to forgive you for anything you have done that has made Him sad. Then turn away from sin and turn back to God.
  • Pray for a desire to be like the sons of Korah, singing God’s praises and telling the world of His goodness.
