Family Devotion Day 28: Do you have a mentor?
Read
Learn
Mentors are teacher-like figures who are invested in helping someone (usually younger) to grow in wisdom, character and a knowledge of truth.
The Bible repeatedly shows us that great people who did great things for God had great mentors who mentored them.
This mentorship also often gets passed from generation to generation. Here are just a few examples:
- Moses had Jethro.
- Joshua had Moses.
- Samuel had Eli.
- Saul and David had Samuel.
- Elisha had Elijah.
- Esther had Mordecai.
- The 12 disciples had our Lord Jesus.
Christian mentors need to be followers of Jesus not just in name but also in conduct. This means that the way they live, work and love has to match up to what they tell others to do.
Have you seen older Christians who remind you of Christ? If you are very young, it is likely that your parents or children’s ministry teachers are your mentors.
Mentors are people you can respect. Mentors are also people who believe in you.
For those of you who have had the blessing of being mentored by others, it is because someone sacrificed his or her precious time to offer encouragement and advice out of their love for God and His children.
May you one day become like your mentors, and pass on the good gift of mentorship to others!
