Family Devotion Day 25: Run to Jesus!

Read

Hebrews 12:1-2 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Learn

Ever tried running while carrying a really heavy bag? Chances are that would slow you down or worse, cause you to trip and fall.

This passage in Hebrews compares our life of faith to a race – it tells us that we have to throw off everything that prevents us from running, including any sin that weighs us down.

As we journey with God, here are 2 things that we must do:

1. Lay aside every weight: Confess our sins and repent

Sins can threaten our journey of faith, so the first thing we can do is to pray to God sincerely and confess our sins.

When we repent and turn away from our sins, we can trust in Jesus, the one who delivers and rescues us from all our sins.

2. Run the race with endurance: Persevere and hold on to our faith

There are so many things, such as homework, school commitments and other responsibilities and duties, that can distract us from continuing on in our journey of faith.

It is not always easy, so that is why we are called to fix our eyes on Jesus, who persevered in obeying God to the point of death on the Cross. His story ended in victory – Jesus was raised to life again and is now with God.

Jesus is a shining example of how we can press on in our journey of faith even when it is hard. Let us follow in His footsteps!

/ Discuss
  • Reflect on your life: What are the sins that are affecting your relationship with God and the people around you? What does it mean to repent?
  • What lessons from Jesus’ life can you apply to your own journey of faith, so that you can finish your race well?

/ Pray
  • Pray that after you have confessed the sins in your life and received forgiveness through Jesus Christ, you will no longer continue to sin. Ask for the power of the Holy Spirit to help you!
  • Pray that you will always turn to and depend on Jesus when it becomes tiring and difficult to hold on to your faith.
