At some point in our lives, we may have forgotten that children are gifts from God – because instead of bringing joy, they seem to bring sorrow and pain.

Yet Psalm 127:3 reminds us: “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord…”

Friends, there is a difference between a house and a home, a building and a family.

Today, I would like to speak on this theme: Building God-centred home, together.

Psalm 127 is attributed to King Solomon, a man known for his wisdom, wealth and extraordinary achievements.

He took seven years to build the temple of the Lord, and another 13 years to build his palace complex (1 Kings 7:1-8), which included:

The House of the Forest of Lebanon

The Hall of Pillars

The Hall of Judgment (his throne room)

His personal residence

A palace for Pharaoh’s daughter

He also expanded and fortified key cities such as Hazor, Megiddo, and Gezer. (1 Kings 9:15)

Here was a man fully qualified to speak about building and strengthening structures. Yet, at the very beginning of this psalm, he says:

“Unless the Lord builds the house,
those who build it labour in vain.
Unless the Lord watches over the city,
the watchman stays awake in vain.” (Psalm 127:1)

Solomon, the great builder, acknowledges that without God, even the greatest efforts are in vain.

We are not just building a life for our children, we are building a home with God.

So, if we are to build God-centred homes together, we must learn to:

1. Let God build our homes

Solomon built many physical structures, but Psalm 127 reminds us that the true “house” is our home.

Without God, even the temple would simply be a museum. Without God as the builder, our efforts amount to nothing.

The phrase “in vain” is repeated three times in the opening verses. It speaks of futility and emptiness, of waking early and sleeping late, only to eat “the bread of anxious toil”. (Psalm 127:2)

In the same way, we may invest in education, provide financially, and plan for our children’s future – but if God is not at the centre, we are labouring in vain.

Interestingly, Solomon himself struggled in this area. Despite his wisdom, his heart later turned away from God (1 Kings 11), and his home life was not spiritually strong.

This reminds us of a sobering truth: You can succeed in life, and yet fail spiritually at home.

So let us remember: We are not just building a life for our children, we are building a home with God.

Children are not trophies of our success, but gifts entrusted to us by God.

2. Let God bless us with children

Psalm 127:3 says:

“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord,
the fruit of the womb a reward.”

Children are a blessing from God. Yet in today’s world, children can easily become projects – their grades, success, and future become measures of our parenting.

But Scripture reframes this: Children are not trophies of our success, but gifts entrusted to us by God.

Solomon wrote extensively in Proverbs, addressing “my son”, teaching wisdom, discipline, and the fear of the Lord. He understood the importance of guiding the next generation.

Yet his own son, Rehoboam, rejected wisdom and caused the kingdom to be divided into two (1 Kings 12).

This reminds us that truth entrusted does not always lead to truth applied. We can teach truth, but transformation belongs to God.

Our children are meant to be shaped and released for God’s purposes and His Kingdom.

3. Let God use our children for His glory

Psalm 127:4–5 says:

“Like arrows in the hand of a warrior
are the children of one’s youth.
Blessed is the man
who fills his quiver with them…”

Children are like arrows. Arrows are not meant to be kept. They are shaped, directed and released.

Parenting is not ownership – it is partnership with God. Our children are meant to be shaped and released for God’s purposes and His Kingdom. And this is not a solo effort – it truly takes a village to raise a child.

As someone who has served many years in the youth and children’s ministry, I have learnt something humbling: There is a difference between what I can say as a parent and what others can speak into my children’s lives.

I remember a moment when a Youth Pastor – someone I had trained – reminded me to pay attention to my children’s needs. It was humbling, but it showed me that I still have much to learn.

So, parents, entrust your children to faithful and godly leaders.

Youth leaders and Youth Pastors, partner with parents to disciple the next generation.

Together, we can build God-centred homes for His glory.

Let us pray.

Lord, thank You for the children You have entrusted to us.
Teach us to work together, so that we may build godly homes.
Help us to release our children like arrows in the hands of a warrior – for Your purposes and for Your glory.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Psalm 127:1-5 “My child doesn’t listen anymore.” “I’ve given them everything, but they’re still ungrateful.” “We have no time together.” “They are always on their devices.” “Why are they drifting from God?” These are some of the laments I hear from Christian parents.
