Matthew 28:18-20<\/cite> Then Jesus came to them and said, \u201cAll authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Let us read Matthew 28: 18-20 and ask the Holy Spirit to give us fresh insights into this familiar but vital passage of Scripture.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThen Jesus came to them and said, \u2018All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/i> (Matthew 28:18-20)<\/span><\/p>\n

Now let\u2019s take a good look at what it says to all of us.<\/span><\/p>\n

1. The main Players of the Great Commission<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u201cThen Jesus came to them \u2026\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

To whom was this Great Commission given? The disciples of Christ.\u00a0We are the main players in this vital game of world missions!<\/span><\/p>\n

The whole Church must be mobilised to be a part of God\u2019s redemptive plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It takes the whole Church to bring the whole Gospel to the whole world. <\/b><\/p>\n

2. The main Power Base of the Great Commission<\/span><\/h2>\n

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me \u2026\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Where is the power base for the Great Commission?<\/span><\/p>\n

We often begin with the question: \u201c<\/span>How can the Church finish this task?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

By so doing, we have made the Church the main powerbase for missions, but the power source is really found in the fact that:<\/span> \u201c<\/span>All authority in heaven and on earth is given to Me.\u00a0 Therefore go \u2026\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

The main power base of the Great Commission is not the Church or the mission agency but Christ Himself!<\/b><\/p>\n

And He promised us: \u201c<\/span>And surely I will be with you always, to the very end of the age.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Why this promise of God\u2019s presence? Because the task is not easy.\u00a0The disciples will face intense spiritual warfare in wanting to wrestle souls from the powers of darkness.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But by the power of God, this task of world missions will be finished!<\/span><\/p>\n

3. The main Purpose of the Great Commission<\/span><\/h2>\n

There are four action verbs in the Great Commission: \u201cGo\u201d, \u201cbaptise\u201d, \u201cmake\u201d and \u201cteach\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Of these four, three are what we call <\/span>\u201chelping verbs\u201d<\/b> and only one is an <\/span>\u201cimperative verb\u201d.<\/b><\/p>\n

This is the one that all the rest are helping to fulfil.<\/span> The imperative verb is not \u201cgo\u201d, \u201cbaptize\u201d or \u201cteach\u201d but it is \u201cmake\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

This means that we \u201cgo\u201d, we \u201cteach\u201d, we \u201cbaptise\u201d only to fulfil the ultimate purpose which is to \u201cmake disciples\u201d.<\/b><\/p>\n

The final measurement of the Great Commission is not: \u201cHow many went on the mission trip?\u201d Or \u201cHow many responded to the altar call?\u201d Or \u201cHow many were baptised?\u201d Or \u201cHow many came to our teaching conference?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But: How many became true disciples of Jesus Christ?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Until we have made disciples, we have not fulfilled the Great Commission.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. The main Pursuit of the Great Commission<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u201c\u2026 make disciples of all nations \u2026\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

The word \u201cnation\u201d is the Greek word \u201cta ethne<\/em>\u201d from the root word \u201cethnos<\/em>\u201d which literally means \u201cpeople groups\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, this word is really referring to ethnic groups and not geographical nations like Singapore or Malaysia or Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is a critical missiological truth because Jesus told us in Matthew 24:14: \u201cAnd this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations <\/span>(ethnic groups),<\/span><\/i> and then the end will come.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the clearest sign in the Bible to signal the Second Coming of Christ.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

When this Gospel of the Kingdom reaches all the ethnic groups of the world \u201c<\/span>then the end will come<\/span><\/i>\u201d!<\/span><\/p>\n

5. The main Passion of the Great Commission<\/span><\/h2>\n

What is at the heart of the Great Commission?<\/span><\/p>\n

I think it is the Father-Heart of God for the lost and our desire to bring glory to His Name.<\/span><\/p>\n

God\u2019s desire is to gather unto Himself a Body that is made up of every tongue, tribe, nation and people to worship the Kings of Kings.<\/span><\/p>\n

I like what John Piper said: \u201cMissions is not the ultimate goal of the church.\u00a0Worship is.\u00a0Missions exist because worship doesn\u2019t.\u00a0Worship is ultimate, not missions, because God is ultimate not man.\u00a0When this age is over, and the countless millions of the redeemed fall on their faces before the throne of God, missions will be no more. It is a temporary necessity.\u00a0But worship abides forever.\u00a0Worship therefore is the fuel and goal of missions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The goal is not only for people to be <\/b>saved<\/i><\/b> but that they will become <\/b>worshippers.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cMissions exist only because worship doesn\u2019t.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Revelations 5:9 paints us the vision of the finished task: <\/span>\u201cAnd they sang a new song: \u2018You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

May the Lord give the Church in Singapore new eyes to see God\u2019s heart for this lost world and an Antioch passion to go and bless the nations.\u00a0And The Time Is Now!<\/span><\/p>\n

Let us pray:<\/span><\/p>\n

Father, I pray in Jesus\u2019 name that through this short time we have together, open our eyes to see Your heart for the lost world. We pray that You will make the Singapore Church a Church that carries an Antioch passion to want to take Your Gospel to the ends of the earth until every people, every tongue, every tribe, every nation is represented before Your throne of grace, worshipping our King of Kings and Lord of Lords.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

In Jesus\u2019 name we pray, Amen.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n
